Trout fishing in the stunning Taupo region is World Famous

Fishing here can be done all year round; the difference is in how you experience it. Chalet Eiger works with fishing guides that have years of (fly) fishing experience (20+) in the North Island and Lake Taupo area, who will specialise in making your adventure happen, and place a high priority on providing excellent service.

Top quality fly-fishing and fishing equipment, clothing, food and transport is provided; you merely turn up and enjoy the trip. Full day, overnight and multi-day fishing and fly fishing trips are available.

Winter: May to September, is the time of the year fish are running up local rivers from the lake to spawn. Large runs of aggressive rainbows ranging from 4 to 10lbs+ can be followed up the rivers.

Summer: Sight fishing in crystal clear rivers and streams for large trout. Lots have headed up the river to spawn and are now on the way back down regaining health and weight. A 5 weight rod makes for exciting fishing.

The Tongariro River fishing season is from 1st December to 31st May. The best months are December and May, depending on seasonal floods. All other rivers are 1st October to 30th June, (approx).

Raft fishing
(or drift fishing) is one of the best ways to access those remote areas, where others can't get to on foot. It is a great and inexpensive way to access those hard or impossible to get to places and can be taken over one or several days. Helicopter fishing and 4x4 vehicle fishing trips can be a several day adventure as well. Combinations such as flying up river by helicopter then rafting down the river and fishing along the way, might be a requirement to reach some parts of certain less accessible rivers.

Single and multi day trips are available on some of the best fly fishing rivers the North Island has to offer including Tongariro raft fishing, and can be personalized. We can provide 1 to 5 day raft fishing trips on the Tongariro, Mohaka, Ngaruroro, and Rangitikei rivers.

Outstanding packages for all types of Lake Taupo fly fishing adventures are available and can be personalized on request. Please let us know what your interests are so a suitable package can be organised for you.

'Catch and Release'

New Zealand's back country is a special place that needs to be cared for; therefore 'catch and release' is practiced. In all cases the fishing areas are wild fisheries that are not stocked artificially.

We can access the back country wilderness areas for outstanding rainbow and brown trout fly fishing with the use of helicopter, 4x4 vehicle and raft transport.
